Fertility Scan

Start your JourneyFollicle Tracking

Follicle tracking by ultrasound can be used to track a woman's natural menstrual cycle. It is a helpful guide for both the fertility team and the couple to have a greater understanding of each individual’s ovulatory pattern. follicle tracking can also be used in conjunction with a number of other treatments such as, in-utero insemination (IUI) or ovulation induction, using drugs such as clomid and also In -Vitro -Fertilization (IVF).

As the ovaries rarely release more than one egg per natural cycle, there is only a small chance of a multiple pregnancy occurring .The incidence of multiple pregnancy is higher in ovulation induction and IVF.In a natural cycle (excluding fertility treatments) the menstrual cycle is monitored to judge the best time for intercourse.

Follicle tracking to time sexual intercourse, is dependent on the ovaries producing their own follicles, the sperm being normal and the Fallopian tubes and pelvis also being normal. It is helpful therefore to know the results of any investigations you or your partner may have had prior to your visit to us.

Transvaginal Ultrasound

Follicle tracking is normally performed by vaginal ultrasound scan from Day 9 to day 11 of the menstrual cycle depending on the length of the cycle (Day 1 being the first day of bleeding).

During a vaginal scan the special narrow scan probe is covered by a sterile sheath and inserted into the vagina. It does not go into the womb or even reach the cervix. The view is far better using this technique over the tummy scan. It is safe and relatively painless. Most women tend to prefer the method as the bladder does not have to be filled. (The bladder should be emptied just prior to the scan}. The vaginal scan will only be performed with your verbal consent.
