Fertility Scan (Cont.)

Problems detectable by ultrasound are as follows:

  • Follicles which do not grow to the correct size (17-25mm)
  • Follicles which do not grow at all.
  • Follicles which do not rupture at the appropriate time (luteinised unruptured follicle).
  • In addition, the lining of the womb may not thicken sufficiently to allow implantation of the fertilized egg.

When and how often should intercourse occur?

If all factors are in place then intercourse may be appropriately timed prior to ovulation in order to maximize the chances of fertilization. It is recommended that intercourse takes place every second day during the time leading up to and during ovulation.

How often is the scan performed?

The timing and number of scans will be decided on an individual basis depending on the finding of each scan. It should not be necessary to perform more than 3 scans per cycle

How long does the scan take?

Follicle tracking on ultrasound usually takes about 5 to 10 minutes to perform. Ask to see the picture of the follicle on the monitor at each scan- and you should be able to see the growth of the follicle and its rupture for yourself on the screen.

A written report will be given to you by the sonographer after the scan. This report is computerized and a copy is store on our data base which will link all follow up scans to ensure that a womens complete cycle is recorded and charted.
